Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park

Today, Jim, Ed, Andy and Lucy rode their bikes on a 170 mile round trip that included many of the most popular features of the Black Hills. Linda, tired from the previous day's activities wimped out and stayed home with the Dogs. The first stop of the trip was at the Crazy Horse monument. This monument, dedicated to the famous Chief Crazy Horse, is notable in that it has been under construction entirely with private funds since 1948. Consequently as you can see from the picture of the actual monument and compare it to the model, the monument has considerable progress to go. Andy and Lucy were enthusiastic about their visit to the monument and visitors center. They then rode on through Custer State Park and experienced some of the most secenic and exciting riding that Jim had ever seen in 40 years of motorcycle riding and touring. There were numerous enounters with Buffalo and the roads were extremely narrow with the tightest of turns imaginable and passed through several rock tunnels, some as much as 150 or 200 feet long and only large enough for one lane of traffic--even motorcycles. The ride and views were awsome! After passing over the Needles road Lucy was finally able to see Rushmore! They came riding into camp very tired, about 8:30 PM.
